Workshop 1: Severe Hypodontia
Clinical decision making in severe hypodontia
Teachers: prof.dr. Marco Cune and drs. Marijn Creton
(maximum 18 participants)
Treatment of patients with severe hypodontia is complex because of its heterogonous clinical presentation, both dentally and skeletally. In addition patients are frequently identified at a young age, which may complicate matters. Many clinical decisions have to be made, some generic, some based on individual considerations. In this workshop several topics related to decision making in severe hypodontia will be discussed.
- Preserve or remove secondary retained primary molars?
- Is bone quality impaired in patients with severe hypodontia?
- Is there evidence for the most effective treatment plan for severe hypodontia?
- Can one predict the life time of primary teeth?
- When to refer for genetic counselling?
- What treatment goals should be aimed at during pre-adolescence and post-adolescence?
- What is the impact of dento-facial growth on the timing of implants?
- Is there a generic ideal position of remaining teeth when implants are indicated?
Workshop 2: Geriatrics
Implants in geriatric patients: what to do?
Teachers: dr. Anita Visser, dr. Willem Noorda and drs. Arie Hoeksema
(maximum 18 participants)
During the last 3 decades, implant-retained dental prostheses and crowns/bridges have evolved into reliable a treatment option, which facilitate good oral function, comfort, and quality of life. Except for patients under 18 years old, implant treatment is not restricted by age. Old age is not a contraindication for implant therapy. Several studies revealed high success-rates of dental implants among groups of geriatric patients and consequently world wide more and more dental implants are placed. But once the implants are placed patients are in need of specific aftercare for the rest of their lives. Furthermore, patients treated with dental implants previously may have become dependent, being no longer in the position to maintain a proper level or oral self-care and (severe) complications can occur. These conditions are demanding an individual approach. In the decision-making process for implant treatment planning, the dentist has to consider several issues.
During the workshop these issues will be discussed in depth. Furthermore some complex cases and several topics related to decision making in implant treatment planning for (care dependant) geriatric patients provided with implants previously or without implants but asking for dental implants will be discussed:
- Can we safely provide care dependant geriatric patients with implants?
- Which patients are at risk?
- How to deal with (severe) complications in (care dependant) geriatric patients with implants.
- Implant treatment planning aiming for predictable treatment results during the course of life.
Workshop 3: Digital designing and sculpting facial prostheses
Teachers: drs. Joerd van der Meer and Marc Willighagen
(maximum 15 participants)
3D digital design of facial prosthetics in ZBrush.
The digital design of facial prosthetics can be performed with the aid of expensive software and expensive haptic devices. But there are cheaper and better software alternatives that have been developed to digitally sculpt human anatomy and have been used in the movie and animation industry for years. The most renowned software application for the industry is ZBrush, which has been around since 1999 and contains all the tools to digitally design a facial prosthesis.
As a world exclusive, the UMCG organizes a course in digital sculpting of facial prosthetics with ZBrush in collaboration with Pixologic, the company behind ZBrush. You will be trained by Marc Willighagen and Joerd van der Meer, both with experience in the animation industry. At the end of the course you will be able to sculpt facial prostheses digitally and will have full insight how to proceed from there on.
Workshop 4: Suprastructures without conventional impressions
Teachers: drs. Ulf Schepke, drs. Rutger Schepers, dr. Zachie Fourie, Betty Vedder and Marnix de Wit
In cooperation with: Maarten van Bergen (M3), Katinka Vaas (M3), Ruud Frissen (Biomet 3i), Henk Pierik (Biomet 3i), Serge Roovers (Biomet 3i), Jeroen van Meurs (Nobel Biocare), Stijn Hanssen (Dentsply- ES Healthcare)
(maximum 18 participants)
Digital technology is improving rapidly. New and improved (oral) scanners and computer software are getting more and more on our dental market.
But what can you do with these scanners and software? How does it work? Is it possible to leave the impression techniques behind us and produce our suprastructures on implants without taking impressions? Do we still need to produce plaster casts or other types of models? And if it is possible to have a fully digital workflow can we use it for more complex cases like the Rohner technique as well? What does it cost? And how can we install these features in our clinics?
Ulf Schepke, Rutger Schepers, Zachie Fourie and Marnix de Wit try give you the answers on these questions and show you how the techniques work, let you try it yourself and tell you what the (im)possibilities of the modern techniques are.
