Dinner
The Conference dinner will be at the 'der Aa-kerk' in the Centre of Groningen.

Conference reception and dinner

The conference reception and dinner will take place in the Aa church at 10 minutes walking distance from the University Medical Centre, through the lively centre of Groningen.
The reception is organised in the choir of the church and will be held from 19.15 – 20.00. The dinner will follow in the ship of the church and will start at 20.15.

The history of the Aa church probably begins at the end of the 12th century, with a three-aisled vaulted cruciform basilica, which was mainly used a a chapel by fisherman and tradesmen, who settled at the banks of the river Aa.

In the 13th century permission was granted to use the building as a parish church, named Onze Lieve Vrouwe ter Aa (Church of Our Lady ter Aa).

The current church is largely the result of a major transformation of this Romano gothic church into a Gothic one. It started with a new choir in 1452 and after heightening of the transept and the addition of side-aisles, little was left of the old church.

After the Reformation in 1594, Catholicism was banned, and the name of the church was shortened to Der Aa-kerk.
In 1671 lightning struck the tower, destroying its upper part and the western vaults of the nave. The tower was rebuilt in such an amateur way, that it collapsed in 1710, destroying part of the nave.

A new tower in Classical style was built. The colourful upper part was designed by town architect Allert Meijer and was completed in 1718.

A big restoration started in 1975 and was completed in 1987. In that year the church-council handed the building over to a separate foundation, which maintains it. The church is now used for all sorts of events.

Creative workshops

Workshop wine tasting
A short social programme will be offered in the 'der AA kerk', between the end of the Conference and the start of the Conference dinner, consisting of wine tasting.

On Thursday, April 15 we offer an original and wonderful way to relax after a day of hard work at the conference, with a workshop wine tasting. The wine tasting is accompanied by a wine specialist from one of the most famous wine shops (Hein Post) in Groningen. The wine tasting is organised from 18.30 – 19.45 in the Aa church, stemming from the 12th century (see section on Conference Dinner for more information about the church). The wine tasting will take place in the Sacristi.

The conference dinner will follow in the ship of the church at 20.00.

At registration for the conference, participants may book the wine tasting.
